Westlake History

Westlake Established

Westlake Associates, Inc. was established in 1975 when Jack Allbritton, John Downing, Robert Nakao, John O’Neil, James Rose and Carl Schaber joined Edward Boyle and Patrick Hamerly at 1500 Westlake Ave N on Lake Union.

Standing Out

Westlake was was the first real estate company in Seattle where the brokers equally shared in the entire expense of running the company and received 95% of their commissions in return, with the Designated Broker only receiving 5% of the commission. Prior to the innovative structure of Westlake Associates, Inc., most brokerage houses offered a 50/50 commission split between the Designated Broker/Company Owner and the salesmen.

Westlake Then

In the beginning of this company, the brokers primarily sold apartment buildings with a total of 38 deals closed in the first year of business, the largest being the sale of the 146-unit Villa Roma for $2,505,000.

Growing Around The Lake

The 1500 Westlake location was too small for the original eight Partners so they moved around the lake to 1627 Eastlake Avenue East, creating much confusion by being Westlake Associates, Inc. on Eastlake Avenue. The Partners began hiring Associates, many of whom later became Partners. Today Westlake Associates, Inc. consists of 19 Partners and 9 Associates with three key employees, two of whom are licensed real estate brokers themselves. In fact, the original secretary, Judy Darrow, is still with the Company today some 40 years later.

Time on Eastlake

As the Company grew, Westlake Associates, Inc. then moved to yet another Eastlake Avenue location – 2810 Eastlake Avenue East – in 1992 where it remained until November 2014 when Westlake Associates, Inc. finally returned to Westlake Avenue to its current location in the AGC Building on South Lake Union.

Westlake Today

Today Westlake Associates, Inc. specializes in the sale of apartments of all sizes, commercial properties and building sites as well as providing professional property management. In 2017, Westlake has closed a total of 58 transactions thus far; the largest being the sale of the 32-unit Isherwood Apartments which sold for $11,550,000.
